The first ever major exhibition in the UK devoted to the 2 Tone music sensation is to be held where it all began in the city of Coventry — and members of the public are being asked to contribute their own memorabilia and memories.
2 Tone: Lives & Legacies takes place at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum from 14 May to 12 September to coincide with the UK City of Culture 2021 celebrations.
It explores the formation of the record label and examines its philosophy, political and social message, design and impact on the music charts of the day.
Central to the exhibition will be the memories, photos and videos from people who lived through the 2 Tone era.
Francis Ranford, Cultural & Creative Director of the Herbert, said: “We are incredibly excited to celebrate the 2 Tone phenomenon through this blockbuster exhibition. The support we have received so far from band members, fans and industry experts has been incredible – however we would still like more contributions from fans.
“If you are a 2 Tone fan, please share your favourite 2 Tone memories, photos and videos with us by emailing them to 2Tone@culturecoventry.com by Sunday 28 February 2021 for a chance to feature within the exhibition.
“We would also be delighted to receive your ‘selfie-style’ video clips (portrait orientation) telling us ‘What 2 Tone means to you’.”
The 2 Tone sound originated in Coventry’s thriving music scene of the 1970s. Its name derives from the legendary 2 Tone record label founded in 1979 by Jerry Dammers of The Specials, referencing a desire to transcend and defuse racial tensions in Britain at that time.
The exhibition features the stories of the bands that were part of the label, focussing on The Specials and The Selecter — both formed in Coventry — and other ska-influenced bands such as Madness, The Beat and The Bodysnatchers.
Fashion items and memorabilia on display include the iconic 2 Tone suit, Roddy Radiation’s pork pie hat, Fred Perry polo shirt and the Harrington jacket.
An immersive 2 Tone experience celebrates the energy and legendary sound of the bands' performances, and there will be area for visitors to leave their own memories and thoughts.
It brings the story up to date by looking at what band members are doing now, 2 Tone’s continuing influence on music, fashion, politics and culture, and interviews and quotes from original band members and 3rd wave bands, famous fans and 2 Tone fanatics from around the world.
2 Tone: Lives & Legacies has been organised in partnership with Coventry Music Museum and guest curators Simon Reynolds, Cory Barratt, Pete Chambers, Jennifer Otter Bickerdike and Daniel Rachel. For more information go to www.theherbert.org.
